Historia de los aeropuertos de Alicante

  • Luis Utrilla
Language of the publication:

If an airport is a driver of economic and social development for any province or region, it is possibly even more so if this infrastructure is located in a prime tourist enclave such as Alicante.

At the dawn of the last century, the air travel industry already used Alicante as a support centre in the route linking Barcelona and Malaga, the first commercial route in our country. The early facilities at the Rabasa Aerodrome first gave shelter to mostly British tourists, until the El Altet Airport opened in 1967, allowing the number of passenger to multiply enormously; the year of its opening it reached the not insignificant figure of 305,000 passengers.

Aena has continued to support the continuous improvement of its facilities, and this book is being published specifically for the inauguration on 23 March 2011 of the new terminal area of this airport. This terminal will double the airport's capacity and enable it to continue being a bulwark for boosting the economy throughout its area of influence.

“History of the Alicante airports” is undoubtedly a document of great interest, not only for the fast-paced and educational way the story is told and the artwork it brings together - both of this airport and of the aerodromes of the province - but also because its pages display Alicante's more recent history, its institutions and above all the men and women through whose efforts this province with its beautiful weather constitutes a major tourist destination today.
