Historia de los aeropuertos de Sevilla

Fruit of an agreement between Aena and the Official School of Aeronautical Engineers in Spain, Aena's Documentation and Publications Centre has just brought out the 20th publication of this collection, in which each publication gives the history of a Spanish airport. On this occasion, it covers the airports of Seville.

Seville is a city that has played an important role in Spanish aeronautical history. From its first aerodrome, located in the meadow of Tablada, it witnessed to early landings, such as those of Emilio Herrera and Ortiz Echagüe travelling from Morocco, the flights from the Cuatro Vientos and Jesús del Gran Poder or the arrival of the crew of the Plus Ultra, which led to pages and pages of press coverage at the time. All of these were, and that, without a doubt, important milestones in the history aviation.

However, it is not only the aircraft that make up the aeronautical history of Seville. The well-known images of the Graf Zeppelin in the skies over Seville awoke the passion of the people of Seville, especially when it arrived at the airports of Hernán Cebolla and the country estate of San Pablo. The air balloon embodied the old dream of establishing in this city a line of airships that would unite Europe with South America.

Today Seville has a modern airport that opened in 1992 and has played a vital role in the development of this great city.  With the celebration of the 75th anniversary of the opening of that first airport at San Pablo, it seems appropriate to remind ourselves in this publication of all the ups and downs, anecdotes and, above all, the great efforts of all those who, through their work and enthusiasm, helped to ensure Seville can be proud of its aeronautical history.
